BitMEX Closure FAQ
Why is BitMEX shutting down?
Following a strategic review of the business and the broader crypto industry, the Board of HDR Global Trading Limited (the owner and operator of BitMEX) made the difficult decision to close the exchange. The decision didn't come from financial distress, hacks, or immediate regulatory pressure.
Are my funds safe?
Yes, your funds are completely safe. BitMEX maintains an industry-leading security record with zero customer funds lost in our entire 11-year history, and your assets remain secure during this wind-down period.
Can I still trade?
Trading is available for a limited time, but restrictions will apply in phases. Please also be aware that while the dates below are our final deadlines, we are actively winding down operations. Certain contracts and spot pairs are being delisted and settled early on a rolling basis.
- Ongoing leading up to Closure: We will continue to delist and early-settle illiquid contracts and specific spot pairs. Please monitor our blog and your email for announcements regarding the specific assets you trade.
- Until August 26, 2026: The exchange remains operational for remaining listed assets, but we strongly encourage you to start closing positions.
- August 26 to September 23, 2026: Risk Limits will be applied to prevent you from placing new positions (you will only be able to reduce your positions). We may also force-close existing open positions during this time to ensure an orderly market wind-down. BitMEX takes no responsibility for any trading losses that result from users’ inability to close their positions during this period.
- September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC (The Closure Time): All remaining open positions will be immediately force-closed, and all exchange trading services will cease.
Note: We will apply early settlement procedures to contracts trading with limited liquidity, and notice will be given in accordance with our usual procedures.
Can I still deposit?
We will continue to credit deposits until September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC. Please do not send further funds to your BitMEX deposit addresses after this date. Any deposits sent after the closure time will not be reflected in your account balance and will not be recoverable.
Can I still withdraw?
Yes, you can withdraw your funds. However, please note the following technical changes taking effect on September 28, 2026, at 04:00 UTC:
- API withdrawals will be disabled: Withdrawals via the BitMEX API, including institutional integrations like Fireblocks and Copper, will no longer be supported. You will need to decommission automated workflows and process all withdrawals manually through the BitMEX website.
- Asset fungibility will be removed: The feature allowing USDT, USDC, and ETH to be withdrawn across multiple networks will be removed. After this date, these three assets will only be held and available for withdrawal on the Ethereum network.
Will I be able to access my account after September 23?
Yes, you will still be able to log in to your BitMEX account after the closure date to withdraw your funds. However, your access to the platform will be strictly limited. You will be able to view your wallet balances, transaction history, and access the withdrawal pages, but features like the trading interface (Trade page) and other discontinued exchange services will no longer be visible or accessible.
What happens if I don't close my position by September 23?
Any open positions remaining at the Closure Time (September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC) will be immediately force-closed by the system. The settlement price for these forced closures will be determined using the relevant Settlement Price or index for each contract at that time, in accordance with our standard settlement procedures. The resulting funds from these closed positions will be added to your wallet balance. We strongly encourage you to close your positions manually before this deadline so you maintain control over your execution price and timing.
What happens if I don't withdraw my funds by September 23?
From September 23, 2026, onwards, all fully verified (KYC'd) balances remaining on the exchange will be charged a monthly account fee. This fee will be 1% per annum or the equivalent of $50 USD (whichever is greater) until the balance is fully withdrawn. This fee will increase over time if balances are left on the platform.
Please note: These fees will only be deducted from your existing account balance. Your balance will never go below zero, and you will not owe BitMEX any additional funds once your balance is fully depleted. If your remaining balance is below the minimum withdrawal amount, the fee will simply reduce your balance to zero, and no further action or payment will be required from you.
What about my BMEX Tokens?
We understand that the announcement of our closure has understandably impacted the market price of BMEX, as the token's primary utility was tied to trading fee discounts on our exchange. We deeply empathise with the frustration this may cause. To ensure all users have immediate and equal access to manage their assets as they see fit, we have unstaked all BMEX tokens. Because BMEX is a market-traded asset, its value continues to be determined purely by open market dynamics. As with all other digital assets, please ensure you withdraw your BMEX to an external wallet or exchange prior to the upcoming deadlines.
