What Is Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid is a Layer-1 blockchain purpose-built for trading. It hosts a decentralised perpetual futures exchange with a fully on-chain Central Limit Order Book (CLOB), zero gas fees, and sub-second execution. How Does Hyperliquid Work?

The platform was built by former MIT and Hudson River Trading engineers. It runs on a custom consensus mechanism called HyperBFT, which enables optimistic responsiveness. The network processes transactions as fast as validators can communicate rather than waiting for rigid block timers. This delivers up to 200,000 orders per second with sub-second latency and zero gas fees for placing or cancelling orders.

Traders connect a Web3 wallet such as MetaMask or Rabby. Funds remain under the trader’s control until a trade executes. There is no exchange wallet holding private keys.

What Are the Key Components of the Hyperliquid Ecosystem?

Two core components drive the Hyperliquid economy: the HLP Vault and the HYPE token.

The Hyperliquidity Provider (HLP) Vault acts as the primary market maker for the platform. Users deposit USDC and the vault automatically quotes buy and sell orders across the exchange. It profits from the spread and realised PnL when traders lose. It loses when traders win. This is active market making with corresponding risk, not a risk-free yield farm.

The HYPE token serves three functions. It is staked to secure the Proof-of-Stake network. It acts as the gas token for the HyperEVM smart contract layer (core exchange trading remains gas-free). Token holders can also propose Hyperliquid Improvement Proposals (HIPs) to shape the protocol’s future, including new listings and fee adjustments.
